Twin Lakes (Lake Burera and Ruhondo) are located adjacent to Volcanoes National Park Ruhengeri. Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo are set at the base of Muhabura Volcano Mountain. The Twin Lakes formed due to volcanic eruptions in the Virunga region. When Sabyinyo Volcano Mountain erupted, lava flowing from it blocked the Nyabarongo River resulting in the formation of Lake Burera and Ruhondo.
The Twin Lakes derived their name considering their proximity to each other. They are separated by a 1 km strip of land. Lake Burera and Ruhondo cover 28000 hectares. Lake Burera is situated at a higher altitude than Lake Ruhondo. Due to the altitudinal range, Lake Burera seemingly appears to be emptying its water into Lake Ruhondo.
While Lake Burera and Ruhondo are independent of each other, at times the water flows into each other, especially during flooding which comes as a result of heavy rains. The Twin Lakes are usually explored by visitors on primate tours in Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda or those who cross from Mgahinga Gorilla National Park/Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
The Twin Lake tours are ideal for visitors who have traveled for gorilla trekking adventures in Volcanoes National Park Rwanda or golden monkey tracking. This can be done during the afternoon or evening before or after your primate trek in Volcanoes National Park. The Twin Lakes serve best as great option for visitors to relax before/after their thrilling adventures in Volcanoes National Park. Lake Ruhondo and Burera are also a perfect stopover point for visitors heading to Musanze, Kigali, or southwestern Uganda.
