4 Days Explore Nyungwe & Lake Kivu

The 4 Days Explore Nyungwe and Lake Kivu combines ultimate primate adventures in the Nyungwe Forest National Park and recreational experience in Lake Kivu. The key highlights of this memorable trip package include chimpanzee trekking, a canopy walk and a sunset boat ride on Lake Kivu. 


Located in the Southern Province of Rwanda, Nyungwe is where over 13 primate species freely roam together with other abundant faunal and avifaunal species. It contains a total of 500 chimpanzees, 400 colobus monkeys and 310 species of birds.

The Detailed Itinerary - 4 Days

  • Day 1: Pick up, travel to Nyungwe with a driver

    Begin your morning with a delicious breakfast in the comfort of your hotel and later meet with the driver guide for a briefing about your special 4-day Rwanda safari itinerary. Depart from the hotel for 6-hour drive heading toward the Southern Province on a scenic drive and en-route, expect to visit the Nyanza King’s palace, Ethnographic Museum. This will be followed by a lunch break in one of the best restaurants and set off directly to the park to check in at the lodge/camp.

  • Day 2: Chimpanzee trekking & Canopy walk (200m)

    It is your day to immerse yourself in Nyungwe Forest to see chimpanzees in the wild. This unforgettable primate encounter starts after a briefing at the Cyamudongo area and the park guide assigned to you will lead you on this 2-4 hours search for a habituated community of chimpanzees. Nyungwe holds 500 chimps and this excursion is aimed at allowing you to explore in depth their daily behaviours, and take pictures in their natural habitat. 


    The search for chimps also comes with encounters from other primates including olive baboons, l’hoest monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, colobus monkeys and red-tailed monkeys, etc. After your encounter, begin trekking back to the lodge for relaxation and lunch. You will return to the jungles during the afternoon canopy walk starting from Igishigishigi trail taking you about 2 hours.

  • Day 3: Colobus monkey trek and Lake Kivu

    After breakfast, set off for your morning colobus trek with a guide but this will begin after briefing. Different primates besides colobus monkeys will be encountered including red-tailed monkeys, vervet monkeys, baboons, and also birds. Return and you will have lunch, relax and connect to Lake Kivu. The Lake Kivu tour will include a sunset boat ride and later, relaxation in the nearby hotel.

  • Day 4: Depart from Lake Kivu

    At leisure, enjoy breakfast and you will be transferred from Lake Kivu to Kigali. You will be driving on the Kivu belt and arriving early at Kigali to be dropped off at the hotel/airport for departure.
