The tipping culture in Rwanda isn’t a big deal like in most developed destination. But providing a tip is a good practice when you are in a destination. Giving a tip is a sign or a way of saying thank you for the great service rendered to you by the staff at the restaurant, hotel, Safari Company, or other service providers.
No standard amount should be given as a tip. A visitor can tip as much as he or she can –it is an open option and usually, it is done out of someone’s willingness. When planning a gorilla tour to Rwanda or Uganda, ensure that you secure some money to cater for the tipping. This also applies to visitors planning to go for chimpanzee tracking in Gishwati-Mukura National Park and Nyungwe National Park or for the Big 5 game tour in Akagera National Park.
Should I tip on a Rwanda tour?
Tipping on a Rwanda safari isn’t mandatory and culturally, it doesn’t exist. It is the practice that is slowly catching up among the domestic travelers in Rwanda unlike foreign visitors on a gorilla safari or chimpanzee tour.
While tipping isn’t taken serious, it plays a significant role which often is not recognized. What you tip on a holiday is useful in the sense that it helps in uplifting not only the individual you tip, but also those who depend on him/her.
Some of the staff you tip earn small amount and at times, it also delays to come yet they have basic needs to meet. Tourism is seasonal and by its nature, you realize that some of them complete the season without working and it means no earning.
Who should be tipped?
Not sure about whom to give a tip on a safari? The people in service line deserve to get a tip. The categories of people to be tipped include waiters, waitresses, safari/park guides, porters, and others. The amount to be tipped isn’t standard but you can tip from USD 5 to any amount you are willing to give.
The tips for porters are different from the fee for hiring. Hiring a porter can be at USD 10 to 20 per session depending on the adventure. A gorilla trekking tour for instance is done once a day. You can hire a porter for a single gorilla trekking session in the destination you are in for gorilla holiday.
Gorilla trekking destinations in East Africa include Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Southwestern Uganda. Volcanoes National Park in northwestern Rwanda and lastly, Virunga National Park in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
