5 Days Rwanda hiking expedition takes you on a thrilling adventure to explore the Virunga Volcanoes including Bisoke, Karisimbi, and Muhabura. Your volcano hiking expedition in Rwanda will be enjoyed in Volcanoes National Park Ruhengeri. The Karisimbi, Bisoke, and Muhabura Volcano peaks will be conquered on foot with the lead of an experienced guide. 



Volcanoes National Park Ruhengeri is found in the Virunga region. The park extends up to 160 sq. km and features 5 out of the 8 Virunga Volcanoes that make up the Virunga Massifs. They include Karisimbi Volcano (4507m), Muhabura Volcano (4127m), Bisoke (3700m), Sabyinyo (3669m) and Gahinga (3474m). Out of the 5 Virunga Volcanoes, you will be exploring 3 of them as per this hiking expedition package.

Day 1: Pick up & travel to Volcanoes National Park in Ruhengeri/Musanze

Day 2: Karisimbi Volcano hike via Bisoke.

Day 3: Ascend to the summit of Karisimbi & descend.

Day 4: Hike to the top of Mt. Muhabura

Day 5: Departure


Detailed itinerary 

  • Day 1: Pick up & travel to Volcanoes National Park in Ruhengeri/Musanze

    Get up early morning and have a delicious cup of tea/coffee. After, you will depart from the hotel to enjoy a guided city tour in Kigali. On the Kigali city tour, you will be visiting the Kigali genocide memorial, Kimironko Market, craft shops, and more. The Kigali city tour will take about 2 hours and you will settle for an early lunch. 


    After lunch, you will leave Kigali and be transferred to Volcanoes National Park Ruhengeri, about a 2-3 hour’ drive. Upon arrival, expect to check in your lodge for you to relax, dine, and retire for the night.

  • Day 2: Karisimbi Volcano hike via Bisoke.

    Enjoy a delicious cup of tea/coffee and after, catch up with the morning briefing. Get to learn the dos and don’ts to be followed during the Mt. Karisimbi climbing adventure. Karisimbi is the highest Virunga Volcano standing at an altitude of 4507 meters. 

    After the briefing, expect to start hiking from the base to the first phase up to Bisoke side 3700 meters. You will have the first camping on the Bisoke area. Getting to your camping area will take about 6 to 8 hours which comes with breathtaking views of the surrounding areas including Bisoke Volcano. 


  • Day 3: Ascend to the summit of Karisimbi & descend.

    Expect to have a delicious breakfast and after, you will be heading to the final summit at Karisimbi Volcano (4507m). At the summits, you will have uninterrupted views of the surrounding areas and Karisimbi Volcano peak. Later, begin descending back to the briefing area and then proceed to the lodge for relaxation.

  • Day 4: Hike to the top of Mt. Muhabura

    After breakfast, you will embark on a guided hike to the summits of Mount Muhabura (4127m). It will take 6-8 hours to get to the summit of Mt. Muhabura. At Muhabura Volcano Summit, you will be amazed by the breathtaking views of the Muhabura Volcano peaks and Crater Lake. Expect to take pictures and after, begin descending back to where you started your hike. Meet the driver guide to be transferred to your pre-booked lodge for relaxation, dinner, and overnight stay.

  • Day 5: Departure

    After the morning breakfast, you will be expected to check out of your lodge around Volcanoes National Park Ruhengeri. Next will be transferred back to Kigali capital and today marks the end of the special 5-day Rwanda hiking expedition.
