The 6-day Congo Nile cycling tour offers you the best opportunity to explore and experience the most of the Nile Congo trail. The Nile Congo trail is an extensive 227 km trail that runs from Rubavu along the Northern edge of Lake Kivu to Rusizi on the western end of Rwanda, a small town located near the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Embarking on a cycling tour on the Congo Nile trail comes with remarkable views of the countryside characterized by the stunning Lake Kivu, tea and coffee farms as well as the lush Nyungwe Forest National Park. The trail takes visitors to different districts in the western province of Rwanda, especially the Rubavu, Karongi, and Rutsiro as well as nearby fishermen villages.

Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Pick up & transfer to Gisenyi
Have a hefty breakfast in your respective hotels in Kigali city. After breakfast, meet your company representative for a warm welcome and briefing about your cycling adventure on the Congo Nile trail. Once you have had a short briefing, set off for an exciting Kigali city tour.

The Kigali city tour will involve spending about 2 hours and includes visiting the Kigali genocide site, Kimiroko market, and nearby craft shops/centers. Expect to depart from Kigali for Gisenyi about 3-4 hours’ drive. Your departure journey will start after you have enjoyed lunch in Kigali Capital city.

Day 2: Enjoy a cycling tour from Gisenyi to Kinunu
After breakfast, expect to embark on the 41 km cycling excursion for about 5-6 hours. Today’s remarkable cycling experience will involve exploring the steepest altitudinal area of Kinunu. Arrive early and you will proceed to check in your pre-booked accommodation in Kinunu.

Day 3: Cycling tour from Kinunu to Kibuye
Get up early to prepare and also have a delicious breakfast. Afterwards, you will be setting off from Kinunu to Kibuye. Today’s cycling excursion will involve exploring 50 km and this 5-8 hours’ cycling experience involves navigating via hillside.

Day 4: Kibuye to Mugonero
After breakfast, depart from Kibuye to Mugonero 35 km. Your cycling journey includes conquering the highest elevation which is 1887 meters. Arrive early and check in at your respective places of stay.

Day 5: Mugonero-Kibogora
Start your day with preparation and a heavy breakfast. Afterward, depart your place of stay for a 35 km cycling tour. The 4-5 hours cycling excursion involves descending 1440 meters and climbing 1750 meters. Arrive at Kibogora early to check in your place of stay for you to relax, dine, and rest for the night.

Day 6: Cycling excursion from Kibogora to Kamembe

Enjoy a hot cup of tea/coffee and after, set off for a 54 km cycling excursion. This will translate to about 5-6 hours which involves riding on the tarmac road. Today’s cycling excursion won’t be as hectic as the previous days since no tough terrains are available. After the cycling experience, expect to return to Kigali and today marks the end of the 6 days Congo Nile cycling tour in Rwanda with Mist Rwanda Safaris.
