Volcanoes National Park is the only game park in Rwanda where a section of the massive mountain gorillas reside. The park is situated not far from the heart of Kigali capital. Within Volcanoes National Park there are over 12 habituated gorillas to be explored including Susa A, Hirwa, Umubano, Titus, Susa B –Karisimbi group, Sabyinyo, Agashya gorilla family, Amahoro, and more. Unlike the usual game drives in the savanna parks, trekking with mountain gorillas is done once a day and a maximum of 8 guests are allocated to a single gorilla family.


Volcanoes National Park is one of Africa’s oldest park, created in 1925 and has the land area coverage of 160sq.km. The park is largely comprised of an evergreen vegetation, swamp, heath, bamboo and some patches of grassland. 


When to travel to see gorillas


Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is an open adventure and can be enjoyed at any time of the year. But the best time to book your Rwanda gorilla safari should be around the dry season. This is regarded as the peak/high season, a period characterized low or no rains making it the most preferred season for trekking mountain gorillas. The peak months for gorilla trekking run from June, July, August, September and December, January to February.

The wet/rainy season usually falls around March, April, May and October to November.
