Lying in the extreme Southern Province of Rwanda is a lush Nyungwe Forest a peace of paradise of its own. The numerous hiking trails in Nyungwe Forest National Park offer nature lovers a great chance to explore the scenic natural beauty and different wildlife.
The hiking trails in Nyungwe take hikers through varying habitats and reward with great views of the forest, valleys, and waterfalls. Some trails offer a chance for you embark on a canopy walk. During the guided hiking adventure, expect to come across different primates, birds, and floral species. Nyungwe Forest National Park features well-maintained hiking trails and are accessible not only by experienced hikers but also beginners.
Hiking trails to explore in Nyungwe
Igishigishigi trail
Hiking through the Igishigishigi trail begins from Uwinka Visitors Center and takes you about 2 hours to complete this 2.1 km trail. It is one of the easiest trails to hike and comes with magnificent views of the canopy walkway and floral species. The trail takes its name from the giant tree ferns spread along it. It is strategically set allowing guests to connect to Imbaraga/Umuyove trails.
Karamba trail
Karamba hiking trail is 6 km long about 3 hours’ journey. It is found on the former site of gold mine, market, and army camp. This trail is ideal for birders as it ushers hikers to enriching birding spots.
Irebero
Irebero hiking trail starting point is Uwinka Visitor Center and a complete hike takes about 3 hours. This hiking trail offers medium walking experiences through its 3.4 km long loops. A hike through it allows you enjoy views of the scenic Lake Kivu.
Uwinka hiking trail
Uwinka trail takes you on a rewarding 17.8 km hike which involves exploring some of the finest birds and other forest species. Enjoy the melodious sounds of birds and appreciate the lush forest cover.
Umugote trail
Hikes through Umugote trail begin from Uwinka Visitor Center and expect to take about 3 hours. The 3.6 km trail introduces you via the lush rainforest and allows you sight numerous birds and primates.
Umuyove trail
Along Umuyove trail, expect to take about 3.5 hours to complete hiking journey along this 5.5 km trail. As you trek, expect to come across numerous birds or enjoy melodious sounds and also appreciate the lush beauty of the area. The trail also ushers visitors on spots where chimps can be encountered.
Kamiranzovu trail
Kamiranzovu hiking trail introduces you through the washed and largest swamp-Kamiranzovu swamp also believed to be the last spot where the last forest elephant was sighted. This is a 6 km trail and requires 3-4 hours to hike it. Due to the caldera depression, hikers need be prepared to take on a moderate hiking challenge.
Ngabwe Trail
Ngabwe trail is 4.6 km long and introduces nature enthusiasts to various vegetation zones and brings great views of Nyungwe National Park. It is the best route for birding and also primate watching. Along Ngabwe trail, expect to search for different primates including mangabeys, silver monkeys, and colobus monkeys. It is also ideal for picnicking and camping experiences. The beauty about this trail is that it is possible to extend it to the tea plantations in Kitabi and make about 8 hours of trekking.
Bigugu trail
The Bigugu hiking trail takes visitors to Nyungwe’s highest point which is Mount Bigugu (2950m). This 7-km trail features steep areas and isn’t ideal for first hikers. You can embark on it when physically fit and ready for a challenging hiking adventure.
Isumo Waterfall trail
Isumo waterfall hiking trail is 10.6 long trail and is among the most popular trails in Nyungwe National Park. This trail ushers visitors up to the tea plantations and the scenic Isumo waterfalls. It offers 4 hours hike and comes with enriching experiences.
The Congo Nile divide
The Congo Nile divide is 227 km and is the longest hiking trail in the Nyungwe National Park. The Nile divide trail separates the Nile River basin and the Congo River basin. It requires many days to have a complete hike on this trail, about 5-10 days. It is often explored on guided hike, driving, biking or cycling.
Rukuzi hiking trail
Hiking through Rukuzi trail begins at the Uwinka Visitor Center and takes 5 hours to complete 9 km trail. It offers a bit of challenging hikes with higher chances for you to come across numerous primates like chimps and also enjoy views of the beautiful Banda Village, etc.
Muzimu
Muzimu hiking trail takes nature enthusiasts on 3.5 hours’ trek to the remote north-eastern end of Rwanda. The hikes involve navigating via the pine and eucalyptus forests for 5.2 km. The hike through the Muzimu trail allows you to spot some of the bird species and enjoy excellent views of Lake Kivu and the scenic Virunga Mountain ranges on a clear day.
Buhoro hiking trail
Buhoro trail takes you on low and high altitude. The low elevation offers easier hikes through 2386m and high altitude is 2450m. It is the shortest hiking trail explored at Uwinka reception.
About Nyungwe and its wildlife
Nyungwe National Park shelters a range of wildlife species including mammals, amphibians, birds, and more. Over 13 primates live in Nyungwe National Park alone including chimpanzees, Rwenzori colobus monkeys, l’hoest monkeys, owl-faced monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabey, black & white colobus monkeys.
Nyungwe also supports different species of wildlife including black-fronted duikers, giant forest hogs, golden cats, mongoose, western tree hyrax, carnival genet, impalas, otters, Congo clawless, buffaloes, and bushbucks.
Birds –more than 310 species of birds call Nyungwe their home including the regal sunbird, Kivu ground thrush, short-tailed warblers, Rwenzori turacos, blue-headed coucals, tropical boubou, striped pipit, common stonechat, and red-collared babblers.
Nyungwe also protects birds such as Rockefeller’s sunbird, Albertine owlet, red-throated alethe, purple-breasted sunbird, Kungwe apalis, handsome francolin, dwarf honeyguide, dusky crimsonwing, Rwenzori batis, and bar-tailed trogon. The ideal birding trails in Nyungwe include Inganji trail, Isumo waterfall, Karamba and Bigugu trails.
